Offline Pronunciation Apps Compared: Phonema, Speakometer, ELSA & BoldVoice (2026)

Need to practise an answer in your own words away from Wi-Fi? Phonema scores speech on your iPhone and highlights words and sounds to revisit; Speakometer also documents offline practice. ELSA needs a connection, while BoldVoice's offline scoring is unconfirmed. This comparison looks at feedback, audio privacy and price.

Which app fits the way you practise?

For rehearsing an interview answer or presentation line on an iPhone without uploading your recording, Phonema is a good fit. Paste or scan your own text, practise it phrase by phrase, and review the words the app highlights. Its scoring model is included in the download. Choose Speakometer if you need Android or a British pronunciation model; check the exercises you plan to use before travelling.

With a reliable connection, the choice changes. BoldVoice’s filmed coaching can help when you need to see how a sound is made. ELSA gives you a learning path when you do not know what to practise next. Neither benefit follows from where a scoring model runs.

What does “offline pronunciation practice” include?

Playing a downloaded lesson on a flight is useful. Getting feedback on a fresh recording takes more: the app must be able to analyse it without reaching a server. This comparison focuses on that second task. A pronunciation dictionary that only plays examples will not tell you what needs correcting in your own speech.

For an app to meet your privacy requirements, you also need to know whether it uploads recordings when a connection returns, how long it keeps them and whether it uses them for training. Being able to start without an account answers none of those questions.

Our criterion for privacy-first practice is simple: your recording stays on your device during and after scoring, and the app explains any other data it collects.

Phonema

Paste sentences you actually need to say, or scan them from a page. Phonema breaks your text into phrases you can practise one at a time. After you speak, it highlights words to revisit; open a highlighted word to see the sound feedback and a practical tip. You can repeat the same phrase and check your next attempt. This makes the feedback useful for an interview answer, a presentation line or another passage you bring yourself. Text with unusual symbols or names may not always split or score correctly.

The pronunciation model runs on your iPhone. Our privacy policy states that recordings are not transmitted or stored on our servers.

Phonema requires iOS 17 or later on iPhone and has no Android app. Its pronunciation references are American English. It also lacks a filmed course like BoldVoice’s. We have not conducted a comparative accuracy test, so we cannot claim that local scoring catches more errors.

Its App Store privacy label lists product interaction, a device identifier, coarse location and an optional email address as data not linked to identity. You can decline analytics and still practise.

The free tier includes five analyses a day. The configured paid plans are €5.99 a week, €39.99 a year after a three-day trial and €99.99 once. Install the app before going offline; pronunciation scoring then runs on the device.

Speakometer

Speakometer’s facts page says core pronunciation practice works offline on an app available for iPhone, iPad and Android. It offers British and American models, so it suits a British pronunciation target better than Phonema. The Spanish listing shows a €19.99 annual Premium plan.

Speakometer’s privacy policy names advertising and analytics providers but does not specify where speech is processed or how recordings are retained. We therefore leave audio storage as unknown. The offline feature alone is insufficient evidence either for or against uploads.

ELSA Speak

ELSA’s official FAQ requires a stable connection to its servers for lessons. Do not rely on it for feedback on a flight without Wi-Fi. Its App Store privacy label includes audio among data linked to the user.

ELSA does offer assessments and a learning path. If you need a course to follow, that may be a more useful purchase than a tool for checking sentences you supply yourself. The Phonema vs ELSA comparison covers the broader choice.

BoldVoice

BoldVoice’s listing combines filmed lessons from accent coaches with AI feedback. A demonstration can help you work out what to change when you keep getting the same sound wrong.

BoldVoice’s privacy policy says voice samples are stored for feedback and model improvement; users can request deletion. That rules it out if you require recordings to stay on the phone. Check an app before relying on it offline

1. Install it while connected and download any practice material it requires.
2. Turn on airplane mode, then explicitly turn off Wi-Fi as well.
3. Open an exercise and record a fresh attempt. Check that it returns feedback, rather than replaying a previous score.
4. Close and reopen the app and repeat with another exercise you intend to use.
5. Read the audio policy separately. This quick check tests offline availability; it cannot establish what happens to recordings after reconnection.

Sources and method

We chose Phonema and Speakometer because they document offline pronunciation practice, and ELSA and BoldVoice as alternatives for readers considering an online course. The table compares the same six fields for each app. Phonema’s pricing row comes from the product pricing decision and the StoreKit product configuration in the repository; it is labelled as configured because the remote paywall flag can pause sales.

We read the sources below on 18 September 2026. For Phonema, we also checked that the scoring model is bundled with the app and that analytics require consent. For competitors, the evidence is their published documentation and store listings. We did not inspect their code or network traffic, or test scoring accuracy. App Store privacy labels are supplied by developers.

ELSA lists several annual products, including a €109.99 Premium year; its €48.99 product does not specify the same access. Check the offer in your app before paying: prices and included features can vary by country, platform and account.
